Biography

John Felix Anthony Cena Jr. was born on April 23, 1977, in West Newbury, Massachusetts. His parents are Carol née Lupien and John Felix Anthony Cena. He attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts and graduated with a degree in exercise physiology and body movement. He was the center on the football team.

Cena pursued a career in bodybuilding. He started training to be a wrestler in 1999 with Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW). He was given the persona of a semi-robotic character called “The Prototype.” He held the heavyweight championship for 27 days.

In 2000, Cena debuted for the World Wrestling Federation (future WWE). He lost a match against Mikey Richardson, but won against Aaron Aguilera in 2001. In 2001, he signed a developmental contract with WWF. He joined the main WWF roster in 2002.
